Area Converter: Square Meters, Square Feet, Acres & More
This free area converter changes a surface measurement from one unit to another, instantly and accurately. Convert square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometers, square miles, square yards, square inches, square centimeters and square millimeters. Pick your units, type an area or move the slider, and you also get the formula, common reference areas and a comparison table.
Quick answer: 1 square meter is 10.7639 square feet, 1 acre is 43,560 square feet, and 1 hectare is 2.4711 acres. So 100 m² is about 1,076.4 ft², and 5 acres is about 2.02 hectares.
How to Convert Area
Area conversion multiplies by a fixed factor, and that factor is the length factor squared. One meter is 3.28084 feet, so one square meter is 3.28084 × 3.28084 = 10.7639 square feet. The converter first changes your value to square meters and then into the unit you chose, so every pair of units works, including acres to square inches.
| From | To | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| Square meters | Square feet | 10.763910 |
| Square feet | Square meters | 0.09290304 |
| Acres | Hectares | 0.404686 |
| Hectares | Acres | 2.471054 |
| Acres | Square feet | 43,560 |
| Square miles | Square kilometers | 2.589988 |
| Square yards | Square meters | 0.836127 |
| Square inches | Square centimeters | 6.4516 |
Example: 250 m² ÷ 0.09290304 = 2,690.98 ft², and 10 acres × 0.404686 = 4.047 ha.
Square Meters and Square Feet
Property listings, floor plans and building materials switch between square meters and square feet all the time. These values use the exact factor, so they match the converter above:
| Square meters | Square feet | Square yards |
|---|---|---|
| 1 m² | 10.76 ft² | 1.2 yd² |
| 10 m² | 107.64 ft² | 11.96 yd² |
| 50 m² | 538.2 ft² | 59.8 yd² |
| 100 m² | 1,076.39 ft² | 119.6 yd² |
| 250 m² | 2,690.98 ft² | 299 yd² |
| 1000 m² | 10,763.91 ft² | 1,195.99 yd² |
If you are covering a floor or wall, the paint calculator and the roofing calculator turn an area into the amount of material you need, and the concrete calculator does the same for slabs.
Acres and Hectares
Land is measured in acres in the United States and the UK, and in hectares in most of the world. A hectare is a square 100 meters on each side, which makes it easy to scale, while an acre is based on the old English furlong and chain. Farmers, land buyers and surveyors use this table often:
| Acres | Hectares | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 ac | 0.1012 ha | 10,890 ft² |
| 0.5 ac | 0.2023 ha | 21,780 ft² |
| 1 ac | 0.4047 ha | 43,560 ft² |
| 5 ac | 2.0234 ha | 217,800 ft² |
| 10 ac | 4.0469 ha | 435,600 ft² |
| 100 ac | 40.4686 ha | 4,356,000 ft² |
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 hectare | 10,000 m² (2.4711 acres) |
| 1 acre | 43,560 ft² (4,046.86 m²) |
| 1 square mile | 640 acres (2.59 km²) |
| 1 square kilometer | 100 hectares (247.1 acres) |
| 1 square yard | 9 ft² (0.8361 m²) |
| 1 square foot | 144 in² (0.0929 m²) |
Everyday Areas for Comparison
It helps to picture a size. A parking space is about 12.5 m², a tennis court is about 261 m², and a soccer pitch is around 7,140 m², just over 0.7 hectares. An American football field including the end zones covers about 1.32 acres. The reference and comparison panels in the tool list these and more, and tapping one fills the converter.
Who Uses an Area Converter?
Real estate agents and home buyers use it to compare listings, and builders, architects and flooring installers use it to order materials. Farmers and land surveyors use it for plots in acres and hectares, and students use it for geometry and science. To work out the area of a shape from its dimensions, see the area calculator, and for other measurements, see the length converter, the volume converter, or the unit converter, which brings every category together.
