Temperature Converter: Celsius, Fahrenheit & Kelvin
This free temperature converter changes a temperature between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin, instantly and accurately. Enter a value, choose your scales or move the slider, and you also get the formula, common reference points such as freezing and boiling, and a comparison table. It works for cooking, weather, science homework and everyday use.
Quick answer: 0 °C is 32 °F, 100 °C is 212 °F, and 0 °C is 273.15 K. Body temperature of 37 °C is 98.6 °F, and a room at 20 °C is 68 °F.
How to Convert Temperature
Temperature scales start at different zero points, so converting needs a formula with an offset, not one multiplier. To change Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. To change Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15. The converter first changes your value to Celsius and then into the scale you chose, so every pair works.
| From | To | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Celsius | Fahrenheit | °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 |
| Fahrenheit | Celsius | °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 |
| Celsius | Kelvin | K = °C + 273.15 |
| Kelvin | Celsius | °C = K − 273.15 |
| Fahrenheit | Kelvin | K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 |
| Kelvin | Fahrenheit | °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32 |
Example: 25 °C × 9/5 + 32 = 77 °F, and 212 °F − 32 = 180, × 5/9 = 100 °C.
Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin Compared
These everyday values use the exact formulas, so they match the converter above:
| Celsius | Fahrenheit | Kelvin |
|---|---|---|
| -40 °C | -40 °F | 233.15 K |
| -18 °C | -0.4 °F | 255.15 K |
| 0 °C | 32 °F | 273.15 K |
| 10 °C | 50 °F | 283.15 K |
| 20 °C | 68 °F | 293.15 K |
| 25 °C | 77 °F | 298.15 K |
| 30 °C | 86 °F | 303.15 K |
| 37 °C | 98.6 °F | 310.15 K |
| 100 °C | 212 °F | 373.15 K |
Celsius is used for weather and cooking in most of the world, Fahrenheit is the everyday scale in the United States, and Kelvin is the standard in physics and chemistry. A change of 1 °C equals a change of 1 K, and a change of 1 °C equals 1.8 °F.
Oven Temperatures
Recipes from different countries use different scales. These are the common oven settings, rounded to the nearest degree:
| Oven setting | Fahrenheit | Celsius |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 250 °F | 121 °C |
| Moderate | 350 °F | 177 °C |
| Hot | 400 °F | 204 °C |
| Very hot | 450 °F | 232 °C |
| Broil / grill | 500 °F | 260 °C |
Fan or convection ovens usually run about 20 °C (around 25 °F) cooler than the figure in a recipe written for a standard oven. For ingredient amounts in the same recipe, the weight converter changes grams to ounces and the volume converter changes milliliters to cups.
Special Temperatures Worth Knowing
Water freezes at 0 °C (32 °F, 273.15 K) and boils at 100 °C (212 °F, 373.15 K) at sea level. Normal body temperature is about 37 °C or 98.6 °F. Absolute zero is 0 K, −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F, the lowest temperature possible. The two scales meet at −40, where −40 °C equals −40 °F.
Who Uses a Temperature Converter?
Students use it for science and math, cooks and bakers use it to read recipes from other countries, and travelers use it to understand a weather forecast abroad. Engineers, lab technicians and HVAC professionals use it for specifications, and people checking a fever or a room thermostat use it for quick answers. For other measurements, see the length converter, the area converter or the unit converter, which brings every category together.
