Scientific Context
Digital storage is measured in bits and bytes. A byte is 8 bits, and larger units follow in two systems. The decimal system used by drive makers and most phones counts in thousands, so 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. The binary system used by many operating systems counts in powers of 1,024, so 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Knowing which one applies explains why a new drive shows less space than its label.

Data Storage Converter: GB, MB, TB, KB & More

This free data storage converter changes a file size or drive capacity from one unit to another, instantly and accurately. Convert bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes, as well as the binary units KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB and the network units kilobit, megabit and gigabit. Pick your units, type a size or move the slider, and the formula, common file sizes and a comparison table update with it.

Quick answer: 1 GB is 1,000 MB, 1 TB is 1,000 GB, and 1 byte is 8 bits. So 4 GB is 4,000 MB, and a 2 TB drive holds 2,000 GB.

How to Convert Data Storage

Storage conversion multiplies by a fixed factor. To change GB to MB, multiply by 1,000, and to change TB to GB, multiply by 1,000. The converter first turns your value into bytes and then into the unit you chose, so every pair of units works, including MiB to GB or megabits to megabytes.

Decimal and Binary Units

Two systems share the same names, and that causes most of the confusion. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) step by 1,000 and are used by drive makers, phones and network providers. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) step by 1,024 and are used by memory and by many operating systems, which often still label them KB, MB and GB. One GiB is 1.0737418 GB, so the gap grows with every step.

Why a New Drive Shows Less Space

A 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. When an operating system divides that by 1,024 three times, it reports about 931 GB. Nothing is missing, and the numbers only use different units. The same applies to a 512 GB drive, which shows about 476.8 GB. Use the converter with the binary units to see both figures.

Bits, Bytes and Internet Speed

Storage is counted in bytes, while connection speeds are counted in bits per second. Divide a megabit figure by 8 to get megabytes, so a 100 Mb connection moves at most 12.5 MB each second. To see what share of a drive a file takes up, divide its size by the capacity or use the percentage calculator, and for other measurements try the main unit converter.

Who Uses a Data Storage Converter?

People use it to compare phone and laptop storage, plan backups and cloud plans, and check whether a video fits on a card or a disc. IT teams use it for servers and quotas, designers and photographers for project folders, and students for computer science work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Data Storage Converter.
What is a data storage converter?
A data storage converter changes a digital size from one unit to another, such as GB to MB or TB to GB. This one supports bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes, plus the binary units KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB, and it shows the formula for each conversion.
How many MB are in a GB?
In the decimal system used by drive makers, phones and most websites, 1 GB is 1,000 MB. In the binary system, 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. So a 4 GB file is 4,000 MB in decimal terms.
Why does my 1 TB drive show less than 1 TB?
Drive makers count 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but many operating systems divide by 1,024 at each step and label the result as GB. One TB is 931.323 GiB, so a new 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB of space even though nothing is missing.
What is the difference between a bit and a byte?
A byte is 8 bits. File sizes are given in bytes (MB, GB), while internet speeds are given in bits (Mbps). A 100 Mb connection moves at most 12.5 MB per second.
Is this data storage converter accurate?
Yes. It uses exact definitions: 1 byte = 8 bits, decimal units step by 1,000 and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) step by 1,024. Results are shown to 8 significant digits.
Is it free, and does it work on mobile?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
