Tip Calculator: Work Out the Tip and Split the Bill

Our free tip calculator finds the tip, the total to pay and each person's share in one step. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage with the slider or the quick buttons, and say how many people are sharing. You can add sales tax, choose whether the tip is based on the bill before or after tax, and round each share up to the next dollar. A second tab works backward and finds the tip percentage you already left.

Quick answer: a $100 bill with an 18% tip has a tip of $18.00 and a total of $118.00. Shared between 5 people, each person pays $23.60, which includes $3.60 of tip.

How a Tip Is Calculated

A tip is a percentage of the bill. Multiply the bill by the tip percentage, then add the result to the bill to get the total. To split it, divide the total by the number of people.

Tip amountTip = Base amount × Tip % ÷ 100
Total to payTotal = Bill + Sales tax + Tip
Each person paysPer person = Total ÷ Number of people

The table gives the tip for common bills at four popular percentages, so you can check your own sums.

Tip Before Tax or After Tax?

There is no single rule. Many diners tip on the bill before sales tax, because the tip is meant to reward the service. Others tip on the total, which is simpler to work out and slightly more generous. On a $86.43 bill with 8.25% sales tax, a 20% tip is $17.29 before tax and $18.71 after tax, a difference of about $1.43. The calculator lets you pick either method so you can see the effect.

Splitting the Bill and Rounding

When a group shares a bill, an even split is the quickest way to settle up. The calculator divides the total by the number of people. If you would rather pay round numbers, switch on rounding and each share goes up to the next whole dollar. In that case the same $86.43 bill with tax and a 20% tip split four ways comes to $29.00 each, which makes the final tip $22.44, or 26.0% of the bill. Rounding up always adds a little, and the calculator shows how much.

How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping customs vary by country and by service. These are commonly used guidelines in the United States, and you should adjust them for service quality, local practice and any service charge already on the bill.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Tip Calculator.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15% to 20% of the bill is the usual range for table service, with 18% to 20% for good service. Customs differ by country, and in some places a service charge is already added. The calculator lets you try any percentage from 0% to 100%, and the quick buttons set 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Move the decimal point one place to the left to find 10%, then double it. On a $48 bill, 10% is $4.80, so 20% is $9.60. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount to it. On the same bill that is $4.80 plus $2.40, or $7.20.
Should I tip on the bill before tax or after tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, because the tip is meant to reward the service, not the tax. Others tip on the total. The difference is small: on a $86.43 bill with 8.25% sales tax and a 20% tip, tipping before tax gives a tip of $17.29 and tipping on the total gives $18.71. Use the toggle to choose.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A $100 bill with an 18% tip is $118. Split between 5 people, each pays $23.60, which includes $3.60 of tip. The calculator also has a rounding option that raises each share to the next whole dollar.
What if a service charge is already on my bill?
Check the receipt. A service charge or an automatic gratuity is often added for large groups and may already cover the tip. If it does, you do not need to tip again unless you want to add something extra for outstanding service. Enter the bill as it stands and set the tip to 0% to see the total.
How can I find the tip percentage I left?
Use the Find Tip % tab. Enter the bill before the tip and the total you paid, and the calculator shows the tip amount and the percentage. For example, a $100 bill and a $118 total is a tip of $18, which is 18%.
