Scientific Context
Time is measured in seconds, the SI base unit, which is defined by the vibration of the caesium-133 atom. Everyday units build on it: 60 seconds make a minute, 60 minutes an hour and 24 hours a day. Months and years are not fixed lengths, so this converter uses the average Gregorian values: a year of 365.25 days and a month of 30.4375 days (one twelfth of a year).

Time Converter: Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days & More

This free time converter changes a length of time from one unit to another, instantly and accurately. Convert seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades and centuries, and also milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds. Pick your units, type a value or move the slider, and you also get the formula, common reference times and a comparison table.

Quick answer: 1 minute is 60 seconds, 1 hour is 3,600 seconds, and 1 day is 86,400 seconds. So 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, and 10,000 seconds is 2 h 46 min 40 s.

How to Convert Time

Time conversion multiplies or divides by a fixed factor. To change hours to minutes, multiply by 60, and to change minutes to hours, divide by 60. The converter first changes your value to seconds and then into the unit you chose, so every pair of units works, including weeks to minutes or years to hours.

Time conversionresult = value × (seconds in the starting unit ÷ seconds in the target unit)

Example: 2.5 hours × 60 = 150 minutes, and 3 days × 24 = 72 hours.

Seconds, Minutes and Hours

Short durations such as video lengths, run times and timers are usually in seconds and minutes. These values use the exact factors, so they match the converter above:

Days, Weeks, Months and Years

A day has 86,400 seconds and a week has 604,800. Months and years are different, because calendar months have 28 to 31 days and a year has 365 or 366. For a single answer, this converter uses the average Gregorian values: a year of 365.25 days and a month of 30.4375 days. To count the exact days between two dates, use the date calculator or the days between dates tool instead.

Decimal Hours and Timesheets

Payroll and timesheets often need hours in decimals. A shift of 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. To turn the decimal back into minutes, multiply it by 60. The hours calculator adds up start and end times for a whole week, and the time calculator adds and subtracts hours, minutes and seconds directly. If you need the time in another city, the time zone converter handles that.

Who Uses a Time Converter?

Students use it for science and math, and video editors and musicians use it to work in seconds and milliseconds. Project managers and freelancers use it to turn hours into days, and developers use it for timeouts and delays. Runners use it to compare paces, and anyone planning a trip can use it to see a long journey in hours or days. For other measurements, see the length converter, the weight converter, or the unit converter, which brings every category together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Time Converter.
What is a time converter?
A time converter changes a length of time from one unit to another, such as seconds to minutes or hours to days. This one covers units from nanoseconds to centuries and shows the formula for each conversion. It converts durations, not clock times between cities.
How many seconds are in a minute, hour, day and week?
There are 60 seconds in a minute, 3,600 in an hour, 86,400 in a day and 604,800 in a week. A 365-day year has 31,536,000 seconds, and the average year used by this converter, 365.25 days, has 31,557,600.
How do I convert minutes to hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 150 minutes is 2.5 hours. To go from hours to minutes, multiply by 60, so 2.5 hours is 150 minutes. The tool also shows the answer in days, hours, minutes and seconds.
How many days are in a month or a year?
Months and years are not fixed, so the converter uses averages: a year is 365.25 days and a month is 30.4375 days, which is one twelfth of a year. A calendar month can have 28 to 31 days, so for exact dates use the date calculator.
How do I turn decimal hours into hours and minutes?
Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. For example, 2.75 hours is 2 hours and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. This is useful for timesheets, and the hours calculator can add up a full week of shifts.
Is this time converter free, accurate and mobile friendly?
Yes. It uses exact definitions, such as 1 hour = 3,600 seconds and 1 day = 86,400 seconds, and shows results to 8 significant digits. It is free, needs no sign-up, works on phones, tablets and computers, and nothing you type is stored.
