Free Online Hours Calculator: Hours Between Two Times and Two Dates

Quickly calculate the hours and minutes between any two times using this simple calculator. Use the two calculators to find the hours and minutes between two times or two dates, with the total minutes and total seconds shown instantly. It is fully mobile-friendly and perfect for planning, tracking or time management.

Quick answer: to find the hours between two times, subtract the start from the end. 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 510 minutes. If the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator counts it as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.

How to Calculate Hours Between Two Times

Convert each time to minutes, subtract the start from the end, and convert the result back to hours and minutes. For an overnight shift, add 24 hours when the end time is earlier than the start. You can type the times in or press NOW to use the current time. The calculator also shows the total hours as a decimal, which is the format most timesheets and payroll systems use.

Time differenceHours = (end time − start time), plus 24 hours if the end is earlier than the start

Hours Between Two Dates

The second calculator finds the exact time between two dates and times. It shows the total elapsed hours and minutes, the decimal hours, the number of calendar days, the total minutes and the total seconds. It counts real elapsed time, so if a daylight saving change falls inside your range, the result includes the extra or missing hour. To count days rather than hours, use the date calculator or the time calculator.

Working Hours Between Dates (Mon–Fri)

Tick Filter by work hours and set your work start and end times to count only the hours that fall inside them on weekdays. Weekends and time outside your hours are skipped. The filter does not subtract lunch breaks or public holidays. For a day count that skips weekends, try the business days calculator, and for timesheets the work hours calculator.

What Is the Hours Calculator Used For?

People use it to total hours worked for payroll and timesheets, plan shifts and overnight work, track freelance and project time, measure study or exercise sessions, and work out travel or waiting times. If you need to convert the result into pay, the paycheck calculator can help, and the age calculator and the days between dates tool cover calendar-based questions.
