What are master numbers?
Master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. Numerologists believe they carry more potential and more pressure than other numbers, so they are not reduced further. Keep them on to see 11, 22 and 33 as they are, or turn them off to reduce them to 2, 4 and 6.
Numerology Calculator: Find Your Life Path, Expression and Soul Urge Numbers
Numerology is the practice of finding meaning in numbers. This numerology calculator turns your full birth name and your birth date into a full set of core numbers: Life Path, Birthday, Attitude, Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, Maturity, Personal Year and Personal Month. It also gives a second set if you use a different name today. Choose from three methods, tap any number to read what it means, and open the name breakdown to see how every letter was counted.
Quick answer: your Life Path number comes from your birth date. Reduce the month, day and year to single digits, add them and reduce again. Someone born on 15 June 1985 has a Life Path number of 8.
The Core Numbers Explained
Each number looks at a different part of you. The Life Path number is generally seen as the most important because it describes the direction and lessons of your life. The Expression number covers your talents, the Soul Urge number covers what you want deep down, and the Personality number covers the first impression you give.
- Life Path: from your full birth date.
- Birthday: from the day of the month you were born.
- Attitude: your birth day plus your birth month.
- Expression (Destiny): from every letter in your full birth name.
- Soul Urge: from the vowels in your birth name.
- Personality: from the consonants in your birth name.
- Maturity: your Life Path plus your Expression number.
- Personal Year and Month: your birth day and month combined with the current year and month.
Birth Name and Current Name
Numerology traditionally uses the full name given at birth, including every middle name, because the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers add up all the letters. Splitting a name into first, middle and last parts does not change those totals. If you use a different name today, for example after a marriage or because you go by a nickname, enter it in the current name box to see a second set of numbers for that name.
Numerology Methods
The calculator offers three ways to turn letters into numbers. The method only changes the name numbers, because dates do not contain letters. That is why your Life Path, Birthday, Attitude and Personal Year stay the same when you switch method.
- Pythagorean: the most widely used Western system. A to I are 1 to 9, then J to R and S to Z repeat the cycle.
- Chaldean: an older system that uses the numbers 1 to 8 and groups letters by sound. No letter is given 9.
- Modern: uses the Pythagorean values but counts Y as a vowel whenever it is not next to another vowel.
Here is the same name read with each method. Notice how the name numbers differ while the Life Path number stays the same.
| Method | Expression | Soul Urge | Personality | Life Path |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pythagorean | 8 | 22 | 4 | 7 |
| Chaldean | 3 | 6 | 6 | 7 |
| Modern | 8 | 22 | 4 | 7 |
How the Numbers Are Calculated
Every number is reduced to a single digit by adding its digits until one remains. For example, 74 becomes 7 + 4 = 11. Whether 11 stays as 11 or becomes 2 depends on the master numbers option. In the Pythagorean and Chaldean methods, A, E, I, O and U are vowels and Y is a vowel only in a word with no other vowel. Accents are ignored, so José is read as Jose.
What Are Master Numbers?
The numbers 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers. Instead of being reduced to 2, 4 and 6, they are kept because numerologists describe them as having more potential and more pressure than the single digits. An 11 is often described as intuitive and inspiring, a 22 as a builder of large and lasting things, and a 33 as devoted to helping others. A master number is usually read together with its single digit, so a 22 also carries the qualities of the 4. Use the master numbers option to keep them or to reduce everything to 1 to 9.
Karmic Debt Numbers
Some numerologists look at the total before it is reduced. If it is 13, 14, 16 or 19, they call it a karmic debt number and read it as a lesson to work on. The calculator adds a short note to a number when this applies, for example a 16 that reduces to 7.

Personal Year and Personal Month
The Personal Year number changes every January and runs in a nine-year cycle. A 1 is a year for new starts, a 5 is a year of change and a 9 is a year for finishing and letting go. The Personal Month adds the current month to your Personal Year. Many people use them as prompts for planning rather than as forecasts.
