Pace Calculator: Running, Walking & Marathon Pace Calculator Online

A pace calculator is a useful fitness and running tool that helps runners, walkers, cyclists and athletes work out their average pace, estimated finish time, speed and split times from a distance and a time. Whether you are training for a 5K, 10K, half marathon or marathon, or simply tracking your walking pace, this free online pace calculator gives fast and accurate results.

It has two calculation modes. In Find Pace, you enter a distance and your total time to get your average pace. In Find Time, you enter a distance and a target pace to estimate your finish time. Pace converts between minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile automatically, so it works for runners everywhere. You can also use it for trail runs, triathlons, treadmill sessions and other endurance events.

Quick answer: running 10 km in 55 minutes 30 seconds is a pace of 5:33 min/km, or 8:56 min/mi, at a speed of 10.8 km/h. Holding that pace gives a half marathon time of about 1:57:05 and a marathon time of about 3:54:11. Enter your own distance and time above for your personal numbers.

What Is Pace?

Pace is the amount of time it takes to complete a set distance. In running and walking it is usually measured in minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi). A pace of 5:00 min/km means you take 5 minutes to run each kilometer, and a pace of 8:00 min/mi means 8 minutes for each mile. Most runners prefer pace over speed because it is easier to hold a target effort during a race or training run. Pacing well helps prevent burnout, improves race strategy and makes energy management easier. These are common pace ranges:

PaceRunning level
3:00 – 4:00 min/kmElite runner
4:00 – 5:00 min/kmAdvanced runner
5:00 – 6:30 min/kmIntermediate runner
6:30 – 8:00 min/kmBeginner runner
8:00+ min/kmWalking or casual jogging

Remember that these ranges are rough guides, and your own best pace depends on age, training, terrain and weather.

Pace Formulas

PacePace = time ÷ distance
Finish timeTime = pace × distance

To convert pace, multiply min/km by 1.609344 to get min/mi, or divide min/mi by 1.609344 to get min/km. For example, 5:00 min/km is about 8:03 min/mi. The calculator also shows your speed in km/h, your pace for a 400 m lap and split times for 1 km or 1 mile, 5K, 10K, 15K, the half marathon and the marathon.

Common Race Distances and Finish Times

This table shows what two steady paces mean for the most popular races:

RaceDistanceTime at 5:00 min/kmTime at 6:00 min/km
5K5 km (3.1 mi)25:0030:00
10K10 km (6.2 mi)50:001:00:00
Half Marathon21.1 km (13.1 mi)1:45:292:06:35
Marathon42.2 km (26.2 mi)3:30:594:13:10

If you are building a training plan, the running calculator and the calories burned calculator can help you track your workouts, and the calorie calculator shows how much energy you need each day.

Pace vs Speed

Pace and speed describe the same thing in opposite ways. Pace is the time needed to cover a distance, while speed is the distance covered in a time.

Pacing Strategy and Negative Splits

Starting too fast is the most common mistake in races. A negative split, running the second half faster than the first, is a popular way to avoid it. Use the split times to set checkpoints, and remember that hills, wind, heat and fatigue will change your real pace. Interval training, endurance runs, strength work and proper recovery all help you improve your pace over time.

Who Uses a Pace Calculator?

Runners tracking training and preparing for races, marathon athletes estimating finish times, walkers measuring their walking pace, cyclists and triathletes planning endurance sessions, fitness enthusiasts monitoring cardio, and coaches creating pacing plans. The calculator mainly suits running and walking, but you can also use it to estimate pacing for cycling workouts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Pace Calculator.
How do I calculate my running pace?
Enter your distance and your total time in hours, minutes and seconds. The calculator divides the time by the distance to give your average pace per kilometer or mile, and it also shows your speed and split times. For example, 10 km in 55 minutes 30 seconds is a pace of 5:33 min/km.
What is a good pace for a 10K?
A good 10K pace depends on your fitness level. Beginners usually run around 6:00–7:00 min/km, while experienced runners often target 4:00–5:00 min/km. Use the split table to plan your race.
Can I convert between min/km and min/mile?
Yes. The calculator converts pace between kilometers and miles instantly. A mile is 1.609344 km, so 5:00 min/km is about 8:03 min/mile.
How accurate are split predictions?
Split predictions are mathematically exact for your average pace. Actual results will vary with terrain, weather and fatigue, so treat the splits as a guide for even pacing rather than a guarantee.
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is the time needed to cover a distance, such as minutes per kilometer. Speed is the distance covered in a time, such as kilometers per hour. Runners usually prefer pace, and cyclists and drivers prefer speed.
What is negative split pacing?
Negative splitting means running the second half of a race faster than the first half. It is a popular strategy because it avoids starting too fast and tiring early.
