What Are Grades?
Grades are scores used by schools, colleges and universities to measure academic performance. They can be shown as percentages (85%), letter grades (A, B+, C-), GPA values (3.5) or weighted averages based on assignments, quizzes, projects and exams. This calculator converts and combines these formats so you can see where you stand.
How to Calculate a Weighted Grade
Students often use grade calculators to track homework scores, estimate semester performance and prepare for final exams. The weighted system gives more importance to major exams and projects than to smaller homework tasks. Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight.
For example, homework at 90% worth 5%, a project at 85% (B) worth 20% and a midterm at 88% worth 20% gives (90 × 5 + 85 × 20 + 88 × 20) ÷ 45 = 86.9%, which is a B.
What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam?
The Final Exam Planner shows the minimum score you need on your final to reach a target course grade. The formula uses your current grade and the weight of the final exam.
With a current grade of 88%, a target of 90% and a final worth 30%, you need (90 − 88 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 94.7% on the final. If the result is above 100%, the target is not reachable on the exam alone. Letter Grades, Percentages and GPA Values
You can mix formats in the same list. Letters and GPA values are converted to a typical percentage, shown in the last column. Your school may use a different scale, so for exact results enter the percentage from your syllabus when you can. Numbers from 0 to 4.3 are read as GPA points, so add a % sign for a low percentage.
