Abjad Compatibility Calculator: Compare Two Names by Ilm ul Adad

An Abjad compatibility calculator compares two names by the numerical value of their Arabic letters. Every letter in the Abjad system has a number, so each name adds up to a total. From that total the calculator finds an element, a burj and a single digit, then compares the two names and gives a score from 0 to 100 percent. It is part of Ilm ul Adad, the traditional science of numbers, and it is used by people who want to see how names sit together before a marriage, a business partnership or a baby naming.

Use the tabs at the top to choose what you are comparing: a couple, a business, a child's name or any two names. If you only want the value of a single name, the Abjad calculator does that, with a letter breakdown and the Mashriqi and Maghribi systems.

Quick example: Muhammad adds up to 92 and Fatima to 135 in the Mashriqi system, which gives a compatibility score of 63 percent.

How the Compatibility Score Is Worked Out

The calculator uses one common traditional method and a simple, open scoring rule, so you can always see why a score came out the way it did. First it finds the Abjad total of each name. If you add a mother's name, her total is added to the person's total. Then it looks at three things.

Score40% element + 30% burj + 30% single digit

Elements and Burj

The four elements are matched to a remainder, and each one has two qualities. Two elements that share a quality, such as Fire and Air (both hot), read as complementary. Elements that share nothing, such as Fire and Water, read as opposites.

Remainder after dividing by 4ElementQuality
1FireHot and dry
2EarthCold and dry
3AirHot and wet
0 (divisible by 4)WaterCold and wet

The twelve signs follow the same pattern, so the burj of a name always has the same element as the one found by dividing by 4.

Worked Example

Muhammad has a total of 92. That gives Water for the element, Scorpio for the burj and a single digit of 2. Fatima has a total of 135, which gives Air, Gemini and a single digit of 9. The element score is 75, the burj score is 55 and the single digit score is 55. Together that makes 63 percent, a fair match.

A Note on Using the Result

Teachers of Ilm ul Adad use different rules for compatibility, so other methods can give other results. This calculator only does arithmetic on the names you enter. It does not predict how people will get on, give religious rulings or replace advice. If you are interested in the same idea with birth dates and English names, try the numerology compatibility calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Abjad Compatibility Calculator.
What is an Abjad compatibility calculator?
It compares two names using their Abjad values. Each Arabic letter has a number, so every name has a total. The calculator turns the two totals into an element, a burj (zodiac sign) and a single digit, compares them and gives a compatibility score from 0 to 100 percent. It works for couples, business names, baby names and any two people.
How is the compatibility score worked out?
Each name total is divided by 4 to find its element and by 12 to find its burj, and its digits are added to get a single digit. The elements count for 40 percent of the score, the burj for 30 percent and the single digit for 30 percent. If you add a mother's name, her value is added to the person's total first. The result is a simple score built on traditional values, shown for interest.
Should I add the mother's name for a couple?
It is optional. In traditional Ilm ul Adad, a person is often identified by their own name together with their mother's name, so many people add it. When you enter a mother's name, its value is added to that person's name. Leave the field empty to compare the names alone.
How does the baby name tab work?
Enter a parent's name and up to three name ideas. The calculator scores each idea against the parent's name and lists them from the highest score to the lowest, with the best match shown at the top. Use it as one small point among many, since meaning, sound and family wishes matter most.
Does a low score mean a bad match?
No. The score only shows how two sets of numbers sit next to each other under one traditional method. It does not predict how people will get on, and different teachers use different rules. Treat it as a point of interest, not as advice for a marriage, a business or any decision.
Can I use English letters for the names?
No, because Abjad values belong to Arabic letters. Write each name in Arabic or Urdu script. If you do not have an Arabic keyboard, open the on-screen keyboard and tap the letters. The spelling matters, so check how the name is written in Arabic before comparing.
